'Air Freight' sounds very glamorous - what does it involve?
Air freight is handled by:
o Passenger airlines
o Dedicated cargo planes
o Super cargo planes
Most freight carried by airlines is stored in special containers that fit inside the cargo hold. Some is put on pallets.
Cargo planes have electric rollers to move freight into the hold of the airplane, capable of handling larger quantities than commercial airlines.
Super cargo planes handle extremely large pieces of freight using the entire end of the plane for loading. They are called Airbuses. The Antonov AN-225 also carries up to 250 tons.
Companies organizing logistics are:
o Those specialising in freight up to 100 lbs, or
o Air freight forwarders capable of handling any size
Small freight package handlers taking freight over 100 lbs usually charge more than air freight forwarders.
To get things moving:
o Fill out your airway bill details, and
o Prepare a commercial invoice and packing list for each shipment
o Ensure that carriers file the Shippers Export Declaration on your behalf and that the appropriate Inco terms are on the airway bill so they can deliver accordingly
Once your goods are collected, you should be given a tracking number so you can alert your customer as to delivery.
For those using a transport forwarder, once shipment is ready, contact the forwarder with details of:
o Weight
o Dimensions, and
o Final destination
so they can determine the type of plane to be used. Either the freight forwarder or you, arrange for inland freight to be forwarded to the appropriate address. You must provide the air freight forwarder with:
o A commercial invoice
o Packing list, and
o A shipper's letter of instruction detailing the information needed to execute your shipment
Once the consignment is loaded onto an airplane, the freight forwarder provides a copy of the airway bill detailing the estimated time of arrival, carrier name, flight number etc.
These documents should be forwarded to your customer via email/fax with another set sent via courier if your customer needs originals for customs clearance.
